Connell is an Australian author. His writing career was launched in 1990 with the publication of his first book, The Right Honourable Men, which won the Miles Franklin Literary Award. His second book, The Right Honourable Women, published in 1996, won a national Young Australian of the Year Award. The Right Honourable Women was also short-listed for the Prime Minister's Literary Award
Connell's third book, a novel called The Last King of Scotland, was published in 1999 and won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book in Australia. In 2002 he published his fourth book, The Last King of England, which won the NSW Premier's Literary Award. His fifth novel, A Long Way Home, was short-listed for the Miles Franklin Literary Award for best book in Australia.
